Work-life balance/interaction - Work-family interaction - Basis concepts of work-family interaction

4 important questions on Work-life balance/interaction - Work-family interaction - Basis concepts of work-family interaction

Work-family interaction van be described on three aspects:

  • Degree: the degree of segmentation versus integration of the work and family domains
    • Segmentation: the work and family domains are seen as relatively non-influential towards each other
    • Integration: work and family domains are tightly intertwined
  • Direction:  a reciprocal relation between work and family domains: work can affect family life and family can affect working life
  • Valence: the fact that the encounter between work and family can be either negative or positive

Negative work-family interaction:

  • The role stress theory postulates that if a given set of social roles impose conflicting role expectations and pressures towards a focal person, it can create psychological conflict and role overload
  • Scarcity approach:  time, energy and commitment are finite and scant individual resources which can drain, leading to role strain

This leads to: negative WFC spillover, work-family interference and work-family conflict

Positive work-family interaction:

  • Role accumulation theory and expansion approach: having multiple roles is not harmful but rather beneficial for individuals
  • Elaborated as the expansionist theory of multiple roles, with four principles of work-family interaction:
    • multiple roles is beneficial for both men and women
    • processes which foster positive work-family interaction are numerous
    • the advantageousness of multiple roles on health depends both on the number of roles and the quality of roles
    • gender differences in personality as well as in workplace and family behaviour are for the most part small
