3 important questions on Job Analyses and Work Design - The models that made job design - The vitamin model

The JCM, DCSM and VM all assume that:

Mental health is affected by job characteristics that are features of the psychological work environment

There are three levels in this graph:

  • (A):  The absence of certain job characteristics impairs psychological well-being, whereas their presence initially has a beneficial effect on affective well-being
  • (B):  Beyond a certain level, vitamin intake no longer has any positive effects, a plateau has been reached
  • (C): shows further increase in job characteristics may either produce a constant effect (CE) of be harmful and impair mental health (AD)

Differences VM vs JCM & DCSM:

  • VM:
    • incorporates negative and positive features of work
    • concentrates on optimizing each job characteristic in the model and is also more comprehensive than the other 2
  • JCM & DCSM:
    • JCM:
      • Focuses on improving work through enhancing characteristics
    • DCSM:
