7 important questions on Games and culture / online toxicity

Breaking the magic circle

Games and their relationship to culture is a typical example of how things (ideologies, messages) ‘break through’ the boundary of the magic circle and into real life.

Procedural rhetoric (Bogost)

Rhetoric in movies and books: author is trying to send a message. In a game you have interactivity. Some of the rules and dynamics of a game represent a certain world view, ideology -> persuasive power of games. Forcing the player to follow a certain procedure: importance of communication to succeed at a goal

The Beginner's Guide (game)

You come upon a clearing in that scene. There is a house with faceless mannequins. You accomplish mundane tasks with a single button ‘he didn’t know what happened, but he felt better’.

The idea is that it is the routine that made him feel better (‘him’ has depression). The routine gave him a feeling that he is in control. The procedural rhetoric is trying to show you/ communicate something.

Gender of E3 presenters

Feminist Frequency looked at the genders fo those who presented videogames et E3 and found that woman were underrepresented. Female 21% and male 73%.
Female in videogames, are we representing them as they are? Lara Croft is not a good representation of a female.

Possible solutions for unconscious bias

- Diversity (culturally) in the team, to prevent the game being a representation of 1 white male
- Diversity in the stakeholders and testers, when designing a game about a exotic place in Africa, test it with people who are known with that area. To prevent cultural appropriation
- Human-centered design, step away from ourselves, try to design for people in general. Trying to create a design process that detaches yourself. The biggest misconception is that whoever you design for is you (not true! That happens very often unconsciously).

New celebrities and parasocial interactions

A lot of people who are not playing games but are only watching games. Passively watching them on youtube and enjoying the parasocial interactions (not direct relationship with that person, but you become familiar with that person. There is a relationship that forms even though they don’t engage with you the same way. Youtubers, Twitch streamers are opening up about serious things, such as burnouts and other personal struggles.

Create social bonds - social endorsement systems

Needs protection from abusing it for gain, limit availability (scarcity improves value).
Needs to be meaningful and salient, integrate with actual matchmaking and behavior (shadow banning (putting the toxic players together, leaving matches will lower endorsement).
Biggest danger is that it must not be punishing, but trying to reward can be problematic. It can be abused to just get that reward, which will make it meaningless. External rewards can diminish internal motivation, rather than work with loss aversion.
