Right hemisphere lesions of the frontal lobes are involved in anosognosia. It is seen as a deficit in metacognitive knowledge (awareness of own thought processes) where the frontal lobes play a big part in this function.

Rosen uses the approach in which learning about changes in one's abilities begins with performance of cognitive or social tasks. Success or failure in performance leads to evaluative process resulting in change of self-appraisal (activation performance monitoring systems comparing actual performance with task demands and with what one expects as acceptable performance). Motivational factors affect degree of monitoring. Discrepancies between detected and expected performance, emotion marks the event with level of importance. Detection of discrepancies and emotional significance allows evaluation of event. Event is then recorded in long-term memory. Events are used to update representation of one's abilities.
