Enter, spinhoven & roelofs (2014) Alleviating social avoidance

11 important questions on Enter, spinhoven & roelofs (2014) Alleviating social avoidance

Where is testosterone associated with

With social dominance and approach behavior and has socially anxiolytic effects.

testosterone levels rise in preparation for a challenging encounter in which social status might be threatened simultaneously reducing fear.

How does this study test whether testosterone administration diminishes threat avoidance and promotes threat approach

Using an objective implicit measure to social motivational behavior; approach avoidance task

How does the approach avoidance task (AAT) works

Involves participants approaching and avoiding socially aversive and appetitive visually presented stimuli by pulling a joystick towards themselves (approach) or pushing the joystick away from themselves (avoidance).

What was the prediction of the AAT studie

Predict that administration of testosterone would reduce threat avoidance and increase threat approach tendencies to angry faces on AAT

Which method has been used in this study

-  24 female participants
- double blind, randomized placebo controlled crossover design participants received a single dose of 0.5mg testosterone suspended in clear solution with ethanol, cyclodextrin and distilled water. Placebo contained same ingredients expect testosterone
- liquid under tongue for 60 sec, effects are measurable after 4 to 6 hours after the testosterone intake

What was the discussion of this study

- results in line with the challenge hypothesis > which states that endogenous testosterone levels rise in preparation for socially challenging encounters, thereby initiating approach motivation and simultaneously reducing fear.

- future research should explore whether testosterone administration reduces social fear and avoidance in social anxiety and may increase  therapy efficacy

How is AAT used in this study

- during RT task, participants responded to emotional face pictures presented on a computer screen, by pulling a joystick either towards body (approach) or pushing it away from their body (avoidance)
- checkerboards (10 yellow and 10 grey) were included as non facial control stimuli resulting in a total of 80 different stimuli

- all participants were instructed to push on yellow stimuli and to pull on gray stimuli and to respond as fast as possible.

Where was the social phobia and anxiety inventory used for

To assess the severity of social anxiety on a seperate day prior to participation

Explain what the social challenge hypothese entails?

Testosterone levels rise in preparation for a challenging encouter in which social status might be threatened, thereby initiating approach motivation and simultaneously reducing fear.

Is this in line with the results with the artikel of enter, spinhoven & roelofs (2014)?

WEL IN LINE OMDAT: It is in line with the hypothese, reduce of avoidance + increase of approach (door testosterone level) = social challenge hypothese is true
NIET IN LINE OMDAT: Social challenge part is not really studied here > so this is not in line with the social challenge hypothese!

What were the main results of this article? (enter, spinhoven & roelofs)

Main results of the paper (artikel 2):
Add testosterone; more approach. Approach behavior increase for angry face, not for happy or neutral faces (adding of testosterone)
Improving testosterone in other levels or administring it will lead to more approach behavior (for people who have social anxiety).
Discussiepunt: only more approach for angry faces, for people who have social anxiety > you don’t want them to only approach the angry faces (but also neutral or happy faces).
