2 Earth: the ecological cycle
This is a preview. There are 3 more flashcards available for chapter 2
Show more cards here -
What is the natural greenhouse effect and how does it work?
Energy from the sun in the form of short-wave light rays enter the atmosphere. -
Give examples of why plants, animals and humans remain living in such an ecosystem.
The kind of soil there is/whether there is enough water -
Why would life on earth be impossible if we did not get any energy from the sun?
Because the sun is the engine of the cycle it for example the air refreshed by assimilation. During this the plants remove co2 from the air under the influence of sunlight. -
What is the difference between short-wave light rays and long-wave heat rays?
Short-wave light rays are solar rays with such a short wave length that they partially fall through the atmosphere without heating up the atmosphere and long-wave heat rays is radiation that is emitted from the earth and that heats up the atmosphere due to the long wave length. -
What is meant by the carrying capacity?
The maximum number of people that can live in an area or on earth without harming the ecosystem. -
3 World: the growth of population and prosperity
This is a preview. There are 4 more flashcards available for chapter 3
Show more cards here -
Why is the growth in prosperity a larger burden on the earth's carrying capacity than the growth in population?
Because when your income for example doubles because of a new job, you will eat more expensive products and you will use a lot more energy. (car, electrical equipment) -
Why is the proper functioning of the natural system threatened?
Because people demand more and more from these cycles. -
How can the earth's ecosystem be permanently altered?
When the natural cycles are seriously damaged by three things:- Environmental deterioration
- Environmental exhaustion
- Environmental pollution
-
What is the enhanced greenhouse effect?
The global temperature rises due to environmental pollution. -
What is soil degradation?
The decline in soil condition caused by its improper use or poor management.
