What is Manifest Destiny?
Manifest Destiny in the 1800’s entailed expanding power and influence from the Atlantic to the Pacific.
A Phrase coined in 1845, the Idea that the US is destined- by God- to expand its dominion and spread democracy and capitalism across the entire North American Continent. -

Major problems in NA-colonial relations

- There were a great number of tribes with vastly different cultures, customs, and languages.
- Some of the main groups of tribes are:
- Plains Indians: nomadic, often horse-centered culture, bison – inspired the stereotype. Examples: Cheyenne, Comanche, some Sioux and Apache tribes
- Pueblo Indians: lived in stone or adobe (earth and grass or straw) towns. Examples: Hopi, Yaqui
- Arctic and sub-Arctic Native Americans, such as Yup’ik in Alaska and Inuit in Canada
