The Reproduction system - The male reproduction system

9 important questions on The Reproduction system - The male reproduction system

What are the functions of the male reproductive system?

The testes produce sperm and the male sex hormone testosterone.

The ducts transport, store, and assist in maturation of sperm.

The acessory sex glands secrete most of the liquid portion of semen.

The penis contains the urethra, a passagway for  ejaculation of semen and excretion of urine.

What is the scrotum? What is its function?

It is a scrotum is a pouch of deeply pigmented skin, fibrous connective tissue and smooth muscle.

Testes located there, these are the male reproductive glands and are the equivalent to the female ovaries. The function of the testes is to produce sperm

Follicle stimulating Hormone (FSH) controls sperm production.

It is divided into compartments, each containing 1 testis one epididymis and the testicular end of a spermatic cord

What are deferent ducts?

These are long, muscular tubes that travel from the epididymis into the pelvic cavity, just behind the bladder.

The vas deferens transport mature sperm to the urethra, the tube that carries urine or sperm outside of the body, in prepartion for ejaculation.

What is the spermatic cord?

Cord-like structure in males that suspends the tests. It is formed by the vas deferens Iductus deferens) and surrounding tissue that runs from the deep inguinal ring down to each testicle.

The testes are suspended so they can remain at a slightly lower temperature than body temperature.

What is the prostate Gland what does it do?

Prostate gland consists of an outer fibrous covering, a layer of smooth muscle and a glandular substance composed of columnar epithelium cells.

Function: is to secrete thin milky fluid that makes up part of the semen. This fluid is slighly alkaline to protect sperm from the acidic environment of the vagina.

What are the ejaculatory ducts?

Two ducts formed by the union of the duct from the seminal vesicle and a deferent duct. They carry seminal fluid and spermatozoa to the urethra

What is the penis? What does it do?

The penis is the passage way for the ejaculation of semen and the excretion of urine.

the penis is fromed of 3 cylindrical masses of erectile tissue and involuntary muscle,

The erectile tissue is supported by fibrous tissue and has a rich blood supply,

Parasympathetic stimulation leads to filing of the spongy erectile tissue with blood. The penis then becomes engorged and erect.

What is a sperm cell? Label the attached diagram

The sperm cell is the male reproductive cell that carries the material necessary for the fetilisation of an ovum to create an embryo.

It has 5 main components: refer to diagram

Function: the head contains genertic information and an enzyme to help penetrate the egg cell membrane. The middle section is packed with mitochondria for energy. The tail moves sperm to the ovum (femal egg) to enable fertilisation.

Can you name 7 changes to a male during puberty?

  • Skin thickens and becomes more oily
  • increase in production of testosterone.
  • enlargment of the penis, scrotum,  and prostate gland.
  • breaking of the voice
  • Growth of hair on the face, armpits chest, abdomen and pubis.
  • growth of muscle and bone
  • production of spermatozoa
