An overview of clinical research; the lay of the land

8 important questions on An overview of clinical research; the lay of the land

Clinical research falls into two general categories;

Experimental (manipulated)
observational (not manipulated)

Experimental research can be subdivided into two categories;

Randomized vs non randomized

Observational studies can be subdivided into analytical studies and descriptive studies. What is the diference in these two studies

- analytical studies; there is a comparison group whereas there is no control group in descriptive studies

- descriptive studies it is not possible to examine associations because the comparison between groups is missing

Analytical studies are distinguished between cohort and case control studies

Cohort; which track people forward in time from exposure to outcome

case-control studies; which work in reserve, tracing back from outcome to exposure

What does measures of association do

Are mostly given by distinguishing between outcomes > healthy and sick.

Why three analytic studies do we have

- cohort study; exposure --> outcome
- case control study; exposure <-- outcome
- cross sectional study; exposure and outcome at the same time

Give an description of cohort study; looking forward in time

Proceeds from exposure to outcome
in cohort studies researchers identify a group with an exposure of interest and another group of groups without exposure. Then these groups are followed over time to see what the outcome of the exposure is.

Give an description of case control study; thinking backwards

Researchers start with an outcome (bijv. Disease) and then start to look backwards in time for an exposure that might have caused the outcome. This study type have two groups; one group consists of people with outcome, one consists of epople without the outcome.

The question on the page originate from the summary of the following study material:

  • A unique study and practice tool
  • Never study anything twice again
