What's a criterion-referenced assessment?
- A test that examines performance against pre-defined criteria. The score of the client is compared with a pre-specified standard or specific skill.

What's a norm-referenced assessment
- In a norm-referenced assessment the results of the individual are compared to the results of a reference group.
- A norming study is required: The assessments are administered to a large group of (similar) people, which allows for calculating average results.
- The individual score of the client can then be compared with the norm (often age- or sex-related). Are the results of the client average, low or high compared to his peers?
