Aandacht - Beperkingen van onze aandacht - The Role of the Parietal Lobes in Attention

6 important questions on Aandacht - Beperkingen van onze aandacht - The Role of the Parietal Lobes in Attention

What are the function of the ventral and dorsal route in attention?

A ventral route ('what' pathway) leading into the temporal lobes may be concerned with identifying objects.

In contrast, a dorsal route ('where' pathway) leading in to the parietal lobes may be specialized for locating objects in space and has an important role in attention.  It also guides action toward objects.

What is lateral intraparietal area (LIP)?

A region in the posterior parietal lobe involved in attention.
It responds to external sensory stimuli and is imprtant for eliciting a particular kind motor response (eye movements, termed saccades).

It has a salience map in which only the locations of the most behaviorally relevant stimuli are encoded.

What are the two streams of the dorsal route and its functions?

1. Dorso-dorsal branche: one of orienting within a salience map and involving the LIP and FEF.
2. Ventro-dorsal brache: circuit breaker that interrupts ongoing cognitive activity to direct attention outside of the current focus of processing.

What is hemispatial neglect?

Damage to the right parietal lobe would lead to less attentional resources allocated to the far left side. Patients fail to attend to stimuli on the opposite side of space to the lesion.

What are the functions of the two hemispheres in non-spatial attention?

Right: important for attending to a salient stimulus
Left: suppressing a non-salient stimulus or 'ignoring the elephant in the room'.

What are the two mechanisms of perceptual awareness?

1.Phenomenal consciousness (experience)
2. Access consciousness (reportability of experience)
