4 important questions on Aandacht - Beperkingen van onze aandacht - Theories of Attention

What is feature integration theory (FIT)? What is illusory conjunctions?

A model of how attention selects perceptual objects and bind the different features of those objects into a reportable experience.  This occurs by allocating spatial attention to the location of candidate objects (pop-out).

Illusiory conjunctions: if attention is not properly deployed, then individual features may incorrectly combine.

What is early and late selection?

Early selection theory: information is selected according to perceptual attributes.
Late selection theory: all incoming information is processed up to the level of meaning (semantics) before being selected for further processing. Negative priming effect.

What is the biased competition theory?

Draws more heavinly from neuroscience than from cognitive psychology. Attention is emergent property of many neural mechanisms working to resolve competition for visual processing and control of behavior.

Competition occurs at multiple stages starting in the visual ventral stream.
Attention is not deployed serially, but rather perceptual competition occurs in parallel. They act together.
