Het brein - The Cerebral Cortex

4 important questions on Het brein - The Cerebral Cortex

What does the cerebral cortex consists of?

- Two hemispheres
- The raised surfaces of the cortex 'gyri'
- The dips or folds 'sulci'

What are the different layers and what do they reflect?

The different layers reflect the grouping of different cell types. Different parts of the cortex have different densities in each of the layers.
There are six main cortical layers 'neocortex'. Then there is the mesocortex (cingulate gyrus and insula) and the allocortex (primary olfactory cortex and hippocampus).

What are the four lobes of each hemisphere?

1. Frontal lobe
2. Parietal lobe
3. Temporal lobe
4. Occipital lobe

Between the frontal and temporal lobes the dividing line is sometimes prominent (divided by the lateral or sylvian fissure).

What are the three different ways in which regions of cerebral cortex may be divided and labeled?

1. Regions divided by the pattern of gyri and sulci
2. Regions divided by cytoarchitecture: Brodmann's areas = dividing the cortex up into areas based on the relative distribution of cell types across cortical layers.
3. Regions divided by function.
