Het brein in beeld - EEG en ERP

3 important questions on Het brein in beeld - EEG en ERP

How does electroencephalography (EEG) works?

Records electrical signals generated by the brain through electrodes placed on different points on the scalp. It is noninvasive and involves recording (not stimulation).

What are the basic requirements of an electrical signal to be detected at the scalp?

1. A whole population of neurons must be active in synchrony to generate a large enough electrical field.

2. This population of neurons must be aligned in a parallel orientation so that they summate rather than cancel out.

What is a dipole?

Positive ions flow into the dendrites when an excitatory neurotransmitter is released leaving a new negative voltage in the extracellular space. This created a dipole.

Dipoles from different neurons and different regions summate and conduct to the skull, and these give rise to the characteristic peaks and troughs of the ERP waveform.
