How does light reach the retina?

Via the pupil, which can change according to amount of illumination. Much light means sensitivity is not important and pupils can be small so not much light is needed to go through.

What do the ciliary muscles do?

They adapt the lense in such a way that an image reaches our retina. This is also called ACCOMODATION of the lense.

Why do some vertebrates have their eyes at the front, and others at the side?

The eyes on the front allow to see depth, and are mostly found in predators, so they can see their prey accurately. The side-eyes are found in prey animals, to look out carefully for predators.
