Mechanisms of Perception: Hearing, Touch, Smell, Taste and Attention - Auditory System - The Ear

6 important questions on Mechanisms of Perception: Hearing, Touch, Smell, Taste and Attention - Auditory System - The Ear

We have cone and rod receptors in our system. Which are active during the day and which during the night?

Cone-receptors are active in the day.

Rod-receptors are active in the night.

What is the duplexity theory of vision?

Cones and rods mediate different kinds of vision.

What do we mean by 'photopic vision'

The vision mediated by cone-receptors; it predominates in good lighting and provides finely detailed colored perceptions of the world.

What do we mean by 'scotopic' vision?

Scotopic vision is mediated by rod-receptors; this predominates when illumination is dimmed (e.g. at night). The more sensitive rod receptors lack both detail and the color that the photopic vision has.

What is the difference in convergence between the photopic and scotopic vision?

There is a high degree of convergence in the scotopic vision and (almost) no convergence in the photopic vision. However, the high level of convergence results in a low level of acuity; the brain does not know which part of the rod receptors contribute to the change.

How are cones and rods distributed on the retina?

Fovea: No rods, only cones.

Next to Fovea: cones decline rapidly, while the amount of rods increase.

Maximum of rods is around 20degrees next to the fovea, more rods in the nasal hemiretina than in the temporal hemiretina.

Cones decline next to the fovea, only small amount.

No cones or rods in the blind spot (DUH)
