How did the Portugese defend their sea route?

They built fortresses to protect their trade posts, harbours and their ships on their way to Asia. They controlled the gold coast (Ghana) and they shipped slaves to Brazil. Spaniards took riches from America and other Eurpoean countries got jealous.

The Portugese had kept their route to the Indies a secret. The sailor Jan Huygen van Lindtschoten was secretly able to copy Portuegese maps and published them in the Netherlands. Nine Dutch merchants found the Compagnie Van Verre, a trade union with investors to pay for expedition. Cornelis de Houtman, leading merchant on the first Dutch trade, returned in 1597 but was not very succesfull (few spices, 190 crewmembers died). But the Dutch kept sailing to the Indies and gradually they became the new dominant power in Asia, while defeating the Portugese.

Why did Dutch had to stay on Nova Zembla?

The Dutch were in war with Spain and Portugal at the end of the 16th century, so sending ships south was not safe. For this reason captain Willem Barentsz led expeditions to the north, to reach China around Russia. One ship got stuck in the ice and they had to stay on Nova Zembla for the winter. After a long and hard winter they took two small boats to start on a seven week trip back to safety, only twelve crew members survived the trip back home.

In 1534 the discoverer Jacques Cartier explored the coast of North America and in further voyages he built fortresses to secure it. This region is now called Canada.
