Who decides when to hold an election?
The government decides. According to the law, it has to take place every five years. In reality, the interval is always much shorter. When a party has a very small (or no) majority in the House of Commons, the interval can be much shorter.
Do you have to be a part of a political party to be a candidate?
No, you don't have to. If you are a candidate, you can write down 'Independent' or simply nothing behind your name.
It is quite easy to register as a political party and the rules for the names of it are very relaxed.
What are the requirements to vote?
To be eligible to vote you must be at least 18 years or older and on the electoral register. Nobody is obliged to vote.
