What is a OLAP data cube?

Online Analytical Processing. Technique behind many dashboards. The idea is that you don’t have a classic database anymore, but data is organized in form like cubes. In a cube you have metrics, KPIs (profit, sales, costs). Different viewpoints for looking at these metrics. Simple navigational operaterators that can be altered/ played with. Cells have certain meanings.

What does a database system consist of?

  1. Data (the database) - usually stored in files (tables)
  2. Software - for handling data accessible via some connection and showing results to the user
  3. Hardware - lots of internal memory to handle data efficiently 
  4. Users - tactical for maintenance of data, organizer for using the data
