Deposition and Interrogatories (pretrial)

Deposition- the testimony of a party to a lawsuit or a witness taken under oath before a trial
Interrogatories- series of written questions for which written answers are prepared and signed under oath by only a party to a lawsuit (not witness), usually with the aid of the party's attorney.

Motion for a Directed Verdict

when a defendants attorney asks the judge to take the decision out of the hands of the jury and direct a verdict on the ground that the other party has presented no evidence that would justify the granting of his/her remedy.

Motion for Judgement n.o.v and Motion for a New Trial (posttrial)

Motion for judgement n.o.v- a motion by either party requesting the court to grant judgement in favor of the party making it on the ground that the jury's verdict against him/her was unreasonable and erroneous
Motion for a New Trial- a motion asserting that the trial was so fundamentally flawed (because of error, new evidence, or prejudice) that a new trial is necessary to prevent injustice
