Peak Performance - During exercise

5 important questions on Peak Performance - During exercise

What happens during strenuous exercise or certain conditions?

Demand for oxygen has increased = rate at which oxygen diffuses increases.

Why does the oxygen diffusion rate increase in certain conditions?

1. Dilation of capillaries- increase surface area
2. Opening of previously dormant capillaries
3. Increased perfusion:ventilation

How do changes in the pO2 during exercise affect the release of O2 from Hb?

During exercise, the metabolism of O2 increases. Therefore, the partial pressures of O2 decrease significantly from 40mmHg to 15mmHg. More oxygen is dissociated.

What is the upper limit on O2 pressure in the tissues?

40mmHg. Everything above this value will only result in small amounts of O2 being dissociated from Hb. Below this value, and a much greater amount of O2 is released.

How does exercise affect the oxygen dissociation curve?

Increases CO2, H+ and Temp. All of these factors change the conformation of the Hb so that O2 is dissociated, even when much has already been released.
If exercising for more than one hour, then lactic acid and 2,3 DPG is produced which increase the acidity of the blood.
