Advanced OSPF - OSPF Stubby areas

3 important questions on Advanced OSPF - OSPF Stubby areas

What does an OSPF Totally Stubby Area do?

Next to Type 4 and Type 5 LSAs it also block Type 3 LSAs.
When an ABR is connected to Area 0 it will create a default route for the Totally Stubby Area.

What does a Not-So-Stubby Area or NSSA do?

A Not-So-Stubby area also prohibits Type 4 and Type 5 LSAs to enter the Area just like a normal Stub Area.
However, it does allow an ASBR in the Area. In this case the ASBR will create Type 7 LSAs to advertise the external networks.

What does a Totally Not-So-Stubby area do?

Just like a Totally Stubby Area it prevents Type 3, Type 4 and Type 5 LSAs from entering the Area.
And just like the Not-So-Stubby area it does allow for an ASBR in the Area, which in this case also creates Type 7 LSAs to advertise the external networks.
