What is the Acceptance and Commitment Therapy?

Therapy in which we learn people to change how they relate to their thoughts. Accept that we sometimes have negative thoughts, but learn to relate differently to them. And help them create a meaningfull, fullfilling life, in line with their values.

What is the aim of ACT?

How are thoughts adressed in ACT?

With cognitive defusion, in which clients are learned to not defuse with their cognitions, but see them as bits of words/pictures. Not identify with ones own feelings/thoughts/memories

What is cognitive defusion?

Technique in which clients learn to create more distance between themselves and their thoughts.

Learn that they are not their thoughts/feelings, but that it are just words/pictures/feelings that are passing through our mind.

What types of exercises can be used in Cognitive defusion?

  • Reframe thoughts "i will never" --> "I have the thought that I will...."
  • Make thoughts bizarre
  • name them a story: The failure story
  • Type it out in bizarre font, colours.
  • Leave it on a stream
  • Mindfullness excersise: obesrving the thoughts crossing your mind with curiousity.
