Autocratic leadership style

Participative leadership style

The leader strives for a consensus (harmonious?) view within a group. There is a high standard of communication between leader and members. The leader is visable and accessible. Questions and discussion are encouraged.

Democratic leadership style

Decisions are made by the group, either by consultation or vote (if necessary). The great advantage of this approach is that all members are bound by the group decission and support it.

What is line communication?

Line communication is communication via hierarchical channels.

Communication in an organisation often starts with line communication: team meetings, talks and speeches. These are formal ways of communication. However, line communication is not always enough to get a message across employees.

What is parallel communication?

Parallel communication is the communication through additional media directed to all employees at the same time.

For example, an internal employee magazine, an intranet, social media, special events or a newsletter. This type of communication skips the official hierarchy and can therefore reach many internal groups at the same time.

What is horizontal communication?

Horizontal communication is when a middle manager of one appartment communicates with another department.

What is vertical communication?

Vertical communication is when middle managers communicate with their subordinates (downwards). But, if the employees talk to their manager it is called upward communication.
