Approaches to environmentally improved production - The science behind the practical approaches: analytical tools

3 important questions on Approaches to environmentally improved production - The science behind the practical approaches: analytical tools

Where does material flow analysis focus on?

MFA is an analytic intrument to study industrial ecology. It focuses on flow of materials through the economy and can be extended to include the analysis of material flows in the environment.

What are the differences between Material Flow Analysis (MFA) and Substance Flow Analysis (SFA)?

MFA concentrates on the total throughput of materials of an (industrial) system, aiming to generate macro-indicators of materials input and output.
SFA focuses on certain substances and aims to analyse the causes of a specific environmental problem by generating a complete quantified picture of the substance flows that are related to this problem.

Explain what energy analysis is.

Energy analysis deals with energy flows within a specified system. Studies can focus on the consumption or conversion of 'primary energy', or of energy use in factories that focus on inputs of fuel per activity. Other studies focus on the conversion of primary energy into useful energy. Or an analysis of the overall efficiency with which fuels are converted into 'energy services', such as lighting and person-kilometres.
