Critique essentialist notion of culture

1.     Homogenizing (culture often presented as bounded and clear. It’s not that simple, people can perceive themselves as having more than one culture.)

2.     Essentialist (there is a structure and therefore you act in a certain way)

Plotting: becoming a story before it can be a news item

1. plots are very important to keep people interested in the news: when narratives become blurred (Syria: who’s the ‘good’ and who’s the ‘bad’ guy? Ex. The villain, the freedomfighter, sympathetic ‘native’ and our own ‘babe in the warzone’), people lose interest and zap to another channel.
