What does the AWMB official feel to indicate Qualitätswein look like?

On top of the capsule, Austrian flag white and red.

Outside of the Austrian/EU wine law, two other important labelling terms exist, which are these?

  • ÖTW
  • Vinea Wachau

What does ÖTW stand for in Austria?

Österreichische Traditionsweingüter – Founded in 1992, the ÖTW is a group of producers, based in the Kamptal, Kremstal, Traisental, Wagram, Vienna and Carnuntum who have been classifying their vineyards, in a similar fashion to Burgundy, based on soil type and climate.

For single vineyard wines, or Erste Lagen, as they are known in German, a special logo will be seen on the bottle:
  • Erste Lage logo from the Österreichische Traditionsweingüter association
  • Recently the ÖTW has applied to have these classifications become part of Austrian Wine Law, but a final decision has yet to be made
