Groups as imperfection decision makers - Baron, Vandello & Brunsman (1996). The forgotten variable in conformity research: the impact of task importance on social influence

3 important questions on Groups as imperfection decision makers - Baron, Vandello & Brunsman (1996). The forgotten variable in conformity research: the impact of task importance on social influence

Why this research? Baron, Vandello & Brunsman (1996).

When a task is difficult, people are tend to conform more (but you want them to be critical)
I'm not certain let's look what other people think. Confidence can overrule normative social influence.
They assume task difficulty and task importance influence conformity.

When do people conform more? Baron, Vandello & Brunsman (1996).

If outcome is more important, people may engage more in social comparison. to the extent that task importance is associated with stress, this may also make people more susceptible for social influence
stress and emotion tax attentional capacity, which may increase tendency to rely on various heuristics.this tendency to conform more when tasks are important, may also depend on task dificulty

hypotheses: if the task is important but also easy, social influence is low.
but when the judgement to be made is important and difficult, social influence will be high.

What is the critique on this study? Baron, Vandello & Brunsman (1996).

Look at T-value: one tailed value = 0.4. then you know two tailed value =0.8 which is not significant.
the number of confederate induced errors... ik snap de kritiek niet.
