• What was the hangover from the war?

  The enormous damage from the war. Homeless people, broken houses and factories, agricultural land had been flooded. Food, clothing and fueal were barely available. etc.

• Why did they keep wages and prices low?

  Because of this, controlled wages and prices policy, industry was able to produce cheaply. This was good for exports. With the profits that companies were making they could expand further.

  employment. Many employees in industry came from the agricultural field. The number of farmers and land workers declined rapidly

  Poor farm companies with low profits disappeared. Large farms increased their production. The Neterlands used Marshall aid, among other things, to purchase tractors.

  construction was going on everywhere to solve the lack of housing. Not only caused by war but also by baby boom. At the edge of cities and town, completely new neighbourhoods rose up with endless rows of one-family houses and apartment buildings.

  to the employees who worked 50 hours a week on average and had one week of holidays a year.

• What were people like in that time?

  People were contantly enouraged to live frugally. Diligence and obedience were also important values.  employees linted to emplyers, women listened to husbands, children listened to teacher and parents.  Pepple stuck in the role that men was breadwinner and wife the housekeep. Sex was not discussed and divorce was a scandal.

• How could you see that the wages rose significantly in 1956, and prosperity started to be in reachc of many people?

  The arrival of the Dutch car. DAF of Eindhoven launched a 'family car' in 1958 with  a revolutionary, fully automatic gear system.
