Sampling I: Concepts of sample representation and sample quality - A brief history of sampling

3 important questions on Sampling I: Concepts of sample representation and sample quality - A brief history of sampling

What is area probability sampling?

These procedures select geographic areas down to the city block or small rural segment level with probabilites proportionate to the size of estimated populations and then randomly select specific househould from these blocks of segments. The sampling proces is centrally controlled all the way trough the selection of individual households. Area sampling eliminated interviewer influences on the sample and made it possible to specify explicitly the probability of selection for any household in the population.

What is a disadvantage of area probability sampling in comparison with quota sampling?

It is more expensive.

What are two broad basic principles of sampling?

1. The who of sampling is more important than the how many.
2. The best sampling procedures are those in which the researcher gives a fair chance of selection to every member of the population and mantains control troughout the research proces.
