  • What is a production well?

Permanent wells bringing oil and gas to the surface during the production phase. There can be more than one production well in a field, to increase the production.
  • What are water or gas injection wells?

To increase production of petroleum form a field, water or gas is pumped into the reservoir to maintain the pressure.
  • What is a relief well?

If a uncontrolled blowout occur it may be necessary to drill a relief well. They ease the pressure in the well by the relief well, or pump water in the well to decrease the flow. Than only water is being produced and the well can be killed
  • When are the BOP valves activated?

If high pore pressure is encountered.
  • Which information do we want to know about the well before drilling?

    1. Sea depth
    2. Geological object
    3. Lithology and pressures in the sediments
  • Which type offshore rig is most common in Norway?

    Semi-sub
  • What are the specifications of a Jack-up platform?

    1. Used for drilling in water depths up to 100 m.
    2. The platform must be towered.
    3. Ones in position the legs are lowered and they stand on the seabed.
  • What are the specifications of a Semi-submersible platform?

    1. Maximum stability during drilling.
    2. Can move by own machinery
    3. Are kept in the right direction by bit anchors.
    4. Normal depth, 450 meters (but some dynamic position systems reach 1500 m)
  • What are the specifications of a drill ship?

    1. Max depth 2000 meters.
    2. anchored or some used dynamic positioning
    3. Bigger loading capacity than the others --> less dependent on supply services.
  • What are the specifications of gravity platforms?

    1. They are made of concrete.
    2. They are kept in place by theire weight.
    3. First gravity platform in Norway --> 70 meters
