Building Blocks - Matrices

3 important questions on Building Blocks - Matrices

Explain what a diagonal matrix is.

The same as a square matrix but its 'off-diagonal elements' are all equal to zero.

Name the useful properties of matrices covered in this video

  • Transposition
  • Trace
  • Rank
  • Inverse

What is transposition/transpose?

"In matrix multiplications, it can be handy to switch the rows and columns of the matrix."

The act of switching is called transposition, the matrix that is changed is referred to as the transpose.

If the original matrix was named A, then the transpose of A is referred to as A'  or A-prime . (A with an apostrophe, just like with a derivative in calculus).
