The electric displacement

3 important questions on The electric displacement

Why is GAus law for D nt the same as guas law for E?

This is because there is no Coulombs law for D. The divergence alone is not enough to determine a ector field. The ucrl of E is lalways zero but the curl of D is not always zero. Because there is no reason to assume taht the curl of P vanishes. You cant believe that the only source of D is rho f because then you can make some wrorg conclusions. Moroever D cannot be expressed as the gradient of a scalar and there is no potential for D. However if symmetry is possible than u can determine D by gauslaw.

The boundary conditoions in a dielectric?

The boudnary conditions with D might be more useful than that if E nin dieectrics.

C=erCvac
