  • What is and does the European Commission?

    The European Commission has the most important political role and function, with a supranational character: it proposes and enforces EU laws and manages the EU policies and budget. It plays a key role in the EU’s external relations. Each member state has a commissioner, which means that the European Commission has 27 commissioners. They do not represent their member state but have their responsibilities. The headquarter is in Brussels, Belgium, and the current president is Ursula von der Leyen. 
  • What are European identifications?

    It is quite broad, it goes from football to music to currencies and flags.
  • What is and does the European Parliament?

    The European Parliament is a legislative branch, which means that they make laws, control taxing, and regulate with other states. The European Parliament meets in Brussels, has 705 members, and the president is David Sassoli. Mister Sassoli is elected by the members. It shares powers with the council of ministers. 
  • What are the four symbols of the EU? Explain them briefly.

    1. European Flag; it has 12 gold stars on a blue background. When the council of Europe was created in 1949, they appointed a committee to design a flag, this was the result. 
    2. The European Anthem; comes from the ninth symphony composed in 1823 by Beethoven. This anthem expresses the European ideals of freedom, peace, and solidarity.  
    3. Europe Day; on May 9, celebrates peace and unity in Europe. Marks the anniversary of the Schuman declaration. 
    4. The EU motto; first used in 2000; united in diversity
  • What is and does the Council of the European Union?

    The Council of the European Union is controlled by ministers of member states. It is a rotation role and every six months another member state gets the role. Slovenia is the president till December 31, 2021. Currently, France has the presidency till June 30, 2022. Each president member state works closely with two other member states, which are currently Portugal, Germany, and France. The headquarter is in Brussels, Belgium.
