Total Quality Manufacturing - Quality and Operations - Quality Supports Operations

6 important questions on Total Quality Manufacturing - Quality and Operations - Quality Supports Operations

True or false?
1: The SCV of effective process time can go down when rework increases.

2: Rework can reduce the standard deviation of cycle time.

1: true, 2: false.

If a machine's chance of rework is 1%, what is the chance this station produces 10 good (non-defect) products in a row?

p=0,01. The chance of 10 non-defect products in a row is (1-p)^10=0,99^10=0,904

If the yield rate is 75% for a certain part, how many units do you have to release in order to provide 100 to a customer? How many would you release if the yield rate fluctuates in between 70% & 80%?

1:
100/0,75 = 133,33  So you have to release 134.

2:
It is probably best to release more than 134 (which would be for an average yield rate of 75%) to account for the added uncertainty. To be absolutely sure you could release 100/0,7=142,86 -> 143 units, but the effect of the added WIP might not be good.

What is the difference between scrap and rework?

Scrap is a defect product/part that is unable to be reworked because the defect cannot be corrected or because it is not economical to do so. A new product/part will have to be produced from the start.

Rework represents defect units that can be repaired by traversing some part of the line again.

If a company could reduce its rework in a production line, i.e. by investing in a higher quality machine, what are the possible benefits?

- increase in TH

- decrease in WIP

- decrease in CT/lead time

Consider a system with  (half a job per hour) and p = 0,05 and  conform 12.15.

What does the natural processing time have to be to at least be able to keep up with both new arrivals and rework jobs?

 hour per job
