Water minerals and health - Water balence

6 important questions on Water minerals and health - Water balence

How does water enter the body?

Trough drinks and food

(metabolic water) C6H12O6 + 6O2 --> 6CO2 + 6 H2O

How does water leave the body and how much?

Trough:
  • urin (kidneys) (how much you drink) several 100 ml up to 5L
  • skin (how much activity, temprature humidity) 300 to 400 ml
  • lungs (how humid air is)
  • stools (how much you drink) 150 ml

What is the the renin-angiotensin system?

The kidneys can adjust urine production in order to maintain water balance via an intricate system of hormones referred to as the renin-angiotensin system.

The system will lead to the excess production of urine when fluid ingestion is high and overall water intake exceeds loss of water through the stools, lungs and skin.
Conversely, the system will curtail urine production when water losses exceed water intake.

The renin-angiotensin system allows the body to maintain water balance except under the most extreme conditions.

When is dehydration fatal?

If your water content goes under 10%

How is dehydration often reached?

Related to excess vomiting, diarrhea, the use of drugs that increase urine production, profuse sweating, and decreased water intake

Groups that are particularly vulnerable to dehydration include young children and the elderly.

What happens with water intoxication?

Water intoxication provokes disturbances in electrolyte balance and gives rise to neurological symptoms that are fairly similar to those of severe dehydration.
