What is an interesting difference in the way that Andrew Golden and Mitchell Johnson acted in court? What typologies were these individuals?

Mitchell Johnson (traumatised) - pleaded guilty, apologised in court
Andrew Golden (psychopathic) - pleaded not guilty and made no apology -> though this could have been for legal reasons, the apparent lack of guilt or remorse suggests that, like other psychopaths, Andrew refused to to accept responsibility for his actions

N.b. Johnson and Golden were accomplices

(Newman, 2004 - own reading)

In Andrew Golden and Mitchell Johnson's shooting, how many shots did each individual fire? Who was the dominant partner?

Andrew was the dominant partner during the attack – Mitchell fired 5 shots, Andrew fired 25 (Langman, 2009)

Describe the case study of Dylan Klebold.

Psychotic

  • Appears to have had schizotypal personality disorder
  • Grandiose delusions symptoms: viewed himself as a god-like being
  • Paranoid delusions symptoms: he thought everyone in his life hated him and felt like he was being conspired against. He also wrote about being prosecuted by God, interpreting simple events as conspiracy against him

Psychotic

  • Hallucinations: reported auditory hallucinations
  • Paranoid delusions symptoms: Who was afraid of monsters under his bed and thought demons were going to hurt him and/or his family. He smuggled kitchen knives into his room for protection

What is interesting about the cases where two people carried out the shooting?

Interestingly, while traumatised and psychotic shooters seem to be directly influenced by peers, psychopathic appear to be less so. For example, the attacks which involved a pair of shooters: Golden and Johnson, and Harris and Klebold. In both cases, psychopathic shooters (Golden and Harris) were the driving force behind the attacks. Both psychopathic shooters recruited non-psychopathic partners (Johnson was traumatized and Klebold was psychotic).

School shootings can be triggered by preceding negative experiences such as social rejection, bullying, perceived injustice, or other forms of humiliation

What did Bondü (2012) find?

There is no consistent profile of a school shooter, and that different pathways may lead to an offense
