Bones and bone structure - Bone growth and development depend on bone remodeling, which is a balance between bone formation and bone resorption

3 important questions on Bones and bone structure - Bone growth and development depend on bone remodeling, which is a balance between bone formation and bone resorption

What is bone remodeling?

The proces of bone remodeling continuously recycles and renews the organic and mineral components of the bone matrix. Bone remodeling goes on throughout life, as part of normal bone maintenance. Remodeling can replace the matrix but leave the bone as a whole unchanged, or it may change the shape, internal architecture, or mineral content of the bone.

Describe bone remodeling.

Bone remodeling refers to the process whereby old bone is continuously being destroyed by osteoclasts while new bone is being constructed by osteoblasts.

Explain how heavy-metal ions could be incorporated into bone matrix.

The biochemistry of some heavy-metal ions, such as strontium, cobalt, uranium, and plutonium, is very similar to that of calcium. Osteoblasts cannot differentiate these heavy-metal ions from normal calcium ions, so the heavy-metal ions become incorporated into the bone matrix. Over time, these dangerous ions can be released into the bloodstream during normal bone remodeling.
