After the Berlin Blockade  USA and Western Europe formed the NATO to support eachother when one of them was attacked by another country. The Soviet Union responded to this by creating the Warsaw Pact with the Eastrn Bloc countries.

On 23 May 1949, West Germany became the Federal Republic of Germany with Bonn as its capital. The Soviet Union responded to this on 7 October 1949 by making Eastern Germany into a satellite state with East Berlin as its capital.
