Nervous system - Lecture Twenty One : Neuroanatomy IV - Meninges and ventricular system

5 important questions on Nervous system - Lecture Twenty One : Neuroanatomy IV - Meninges and ventricular system

Explain the features of the Dura Mater meninge ?

  • It is the outermost layer.
  • Most dense and fibrous.
  • Composed of two layers : Outer (periosteal) layer and the inner(meningeal) layer.

DURL FOLDS :
  • Formed from the inner layer.
  • Separates major divisions of the brain and provides stability.

DURAL REFLECTIONS :
  • Falx Cerebri : separates the cerebral hemispheres.
  • Falx Cerebelli : Separates the cerebellar hemispheres.
  • Tentorium Cerebelli : Separates the cerebellum from the cerebrum.

VENOUS SINUS : collecting vein which collects venous blood and old "CSF" which has been circulated through the ventricular system.

Explain the features of the Arachnoid meninge ?

  • Middle layer
  • Contains blood vessels but does not extend into sulci
  • Below the arachnoid is the sub-arachnoid space which is filled with CSF
  • Has arachnoid granulations which perforate the dura mater and facilitates drainage of old "CSF" into the venous sinus.

Explain the features of the Pia mater meninge ?

  • Known as the delicate mother
  • Inner layer of the meninges
  • Transparent and delicate
  • Adheres closely to the brain and can extend into sulci
  • Blood vessels in the arachnoid sits on top of it

What is the ventricular system and the locations of ventricles?

The ventricular system is a network of spaces within the brain, filled with cerebrospinal fluid which nourishes and protects the brain.

LOCATION OF VENTRICLES :
  • Lateral : One each on both sides of the cerebral hemisphere
  • Third : Diencephalon
  • Cerebral aqueduct : Midbrain
  • Fourth : At the base level of the cerebellum

What is the Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF) and explain the circulation pathway ?

  • Surrounds the CNS
  • Provides support and cushions the brain
  • Transports nutrients and waste
  • Produced by the choroid plexus within the ventricles

CIRCULATION PATHWAY :
  • Starts at the lateral ventricles
  • Third ventricle
  • Cerebral aqueduct
  • Fourth ventricle
  • Sub-arachnoid space
  • Arachnoid granulation
  • Exit through the venous sinus
