  • What is foreign aid?

    you can look at it as a receiver and a giver. It is voluntary help from one state to another. It can be seen as the transfer of resources. It could be money, medicine, food etc. Voluntary help, transfer of resources from one state to another. 
  • What are economic sanctions?

    Financial penalties. It is a way to punish a state, or express disagreement, in order to achieve something. You want a state to punish for it’s deeds. Punishment by other states. Venezuela example. You disagree with their international or domestic policy. Russian in Ukraine or Georgia. 
  • What are smart sanctions?

    Directed to individuals, companies or organizations, or restriction trait between the players. Sanction on particular persons, so not on countries in general. For example travel restrictions.
    ICC banning visa’s States. Target particular people in order to put the restriction, in order to punish. 
  • What is the Global Magnitsky Act?

    Punish particular leader with travel ban sanctions and other restrictions for human rights abuse. United States thing.
    American government has the right, restrictions and financial sanctions for government officials who implicate human rights abuse. 
  • What is the state accountability model?

    Our model of accountability involves that it is the states that have to hold the human rights. It is the state that is responsible, it is the state that provides responsibility.
    Neurnberger trials. 
  • What is the Dirty War?

    Government going against its own citizens. Argentina case. 1976-1983, people just disappeared. 30.000 people. People were dropped of the plane.

  • What is judicial enforcement?

    Enforcement of human rights through the traditional mechanism.
    Action that has been brought to the court basically it is an action of opening a case in court, federal court or state court. 
  • What is international criminal court?

    International criminal court is not a court that can prosecute human rights in general. Just certain crimes. These crimes as a. the crime of genocide, b. crimes against humanity, c. war crimes, d. crime of aggression. The court is legally independent of UN. The ICC has a much more narrow focus, because of the subjects and it focusses more on individuals. 
  • What is the Rome Statue?

    Document by which the ICC was created. 1998. Effective in July 1 2002. Not the part of the UN.
