What was signed in 1992 in Maastricht and what did it do?

The Treaty on European Union. This treaty was a major milestone on the road to economic and political integration. The treaty created unified foreign and security policy as well as closer cooperation in justice and home affairs. The treaty also set out clear rules for the creation of a single currency. (trade became easier and it bound people together)

What does the European Union's political system exist of ?

  • The parliament: the directly elected body that represents the EU citizens.

  • The European Commission: the executive arm and is answerable to the Parliament.
  • European court of Justice: Located in Luxembourg, made up of one judge of EU country. Is to ensure that EU law is complied with and that the treaties are correctly interpreted and applied.
  • European central bank: in Frankfurt, is responsible for monetary policy in all the euro-zone countries. The bank is independent of national governments and it has a mandate to keep inflation under control.

Is the European Union a state?

NO, but it resembles the organization of a state but has a unique structure which places it somewhere between USA and the United Nations.
