Q: Universalism-particularism. Rules or relationships?

Universalists: people are admirable if they keep to standards and rules agreed on in their culture (rule-based society). Rules are there for everyone, with no exceptions. Ex. USA, Australia, Northern Europe (UK, Germany, The Netherlands) * Particularists : judge people according to the relationship they have. (Friend, Sister) Is he/she important to you? That you have an obligation to keep and protect the person. Even if rules and regulations say you should not. Ex, Eastern Europe, Latin America, Africa, and Asia.

Q: Emotions: Neutral and affective

In neutral cultures , you do not communicate your emotions but control them. ( Asia, Japan) In affective cultures , it’s normal to communicate your emotions and to receive an emotionally sensitive response in return. (Europe)

Q: Status: achieved and ascribed

Achieved status: the high status you gain from what you accomplished. (the USA, Australia, UK, Germany, Scandinavian countries) Ascribed status : the high status you gain because of whom or what you are associated with (parents, married, age, gender, education).

Q: Three steps to cultural synergy

Cultural avoidance: you avoid confrontation, you don’t impose your own cultural way of doing things. Cultural dominance : you do what comes naturally from your own cultural background, and assume others will adapt. Cultural accommodation: opposite of above. Cultural compromise : you do half of what comes naturally from your background and give up half. The others also keep half and give up half. Cultural synergy : you develop new working ways, you value all cultures.
