4 important questions on Working with Hall's Key Concepts of cultural differences

What is High Conext?

In high context cultures, most of the message is in the persons themselves and in the context of the message ( what surrounds the message)

Implicitly and often non-verbally

Fast and slow messages

Fast messages are those we can decode very quickly (headlines. Emails, text messages).

Slow messages are things like poetry, art, books, and letters. A stranger is a slow message because it takes time to know a person well. Messages can also be slower because they’re trapped in cultural barriers.

Slow information Flow

In low context countries, information is compartmentalized; information stays within departments and doesn’t flow freely. We call this slow information flow.

Prevents more information from being shared, whether inward and outward.

Fast information Flow

In high context countries, information moves about as if ‘it has a life of its own’. There is a minimum of schedules and screening by secretaries and private offices, and a maximum of trying to keep up to date on information. People move into huge networks and share information naturally with friends within those networks. In a way, information flows freely in Holland too and people also have networks. but it’s the norm to keep information compartmentalized, controlled, and planned. More cross-departmental information sharing would be seen as unprofessional.
