4 important questions on Organizations and their structures - Book - Organizational structures

What is the difference between dividing sub-activities based on parts and based on aspects?

Based on parts; split main activity to realize a part of the entire activity. The end stage of A is the begin stage of B.

Based on aspects;   split main activity into sub-activity that reflect a characteristic (aspect) of the main activity, e.g. Chairs, tables etc. We can further divide aspects based on operational and regulatory activities.

Achterbergh & Vriens elaborate that an adequate structure should enable the organization to do the four basic activities, which in turn can adjust the interaction premises  in order to contribute to meaningful survival. What are the cybernetic criteria an adequate structure needs to fulfill?

1. The structure is not the source of disturbance
2. The structure enables employees to deal with disturbances themselves; employees should have enough regulatory potential.

What is the difference between strategic regulation, regulation by design and operational regulation?

Strategic regulation: defining and redefining goals, disturbances can also be dealt with.

Regulation by design: deal with disturbances through changing the infrastructure of the organization. Aim is to a) decrease probability of disturbance and b) build more operational regulation into the organization.

Operational regulation: dealing with disturbances given the existing infrastructure and goals. It aims to apply regulatory potential to deal with disturbances caused by the primary process.

A shared set of basic assumptions regarding dealing with organizational problems and adaptation and realization is more likely to emerge in LVP than in HVP, because people can develop ideas for solutions. A drawback is that LVP's can also obstruct organizational interaction through groupthink. What's this?

Groupthink considers team members developing a strongly held shared understanding of problems and solutions and unintentionally reinforce each other in confirming evidence supporting this understanding and ignoring evidence against it (confirmation bias).
