Electrical parameters - Signal Integrity Analysis
3 important questions on Electrical parameters - Signal Integrity Analysis
The designer should be concerned about several items in evaluating the signal integrity of his PCB! Give some of them!
- impedance control
- Capacitance characteristics
- Inductance considerations
- Crosstalk
- Critical signal speed
- Signal propagation delay
- Switching noise
- And all of the manufacturing elements that impact those characteristics.
How does the propation speed of an electromagnetic wave related to the permittivity of the insulating medium?
c is the velocity of light.
permittivity for some materials:
polyimide 3.5
glass epoxy 4-5
hybrid ceramic 9-10
silicon wafers 15
Noise budget/Noise Margin. Explain!
The modification of the original signal by transmission line effects may effect the performance of the system. The limits on these modifications are referred to as the Noise Budget. It is defined as the allocation of a voltage tolerance for the system DC and AC voltage drops for a device to operate within specific boundaries. There are two primary system noise budgets:
- the DC power supply noise budget
- the device logic signal AC noise budget.
