What graphs are for studying trends over time?

Time Series Plot
Area Graph

What graphs are for 3D graphs?

Contour plot
3D scatterplot
3D surface plot

What is a Histogram?

Simple bar chart to show the shape of distribution and form an essential part of the '1st Pass Analysis' of any data

What is a Dot plot?

Is an alternative to histograms and are also a type of Frequency Distribution Diagram.

What is a probability plot?

It helps to decide whether or not a Histogram is Normally Distributed. It does this by plotting the data in a different format. the plot is a straight line if the data follows this the data is normally distributed.

What is a Time Series Plot?

This is the standard line chart you see everywhere. You can use this to see:
1. Upward or downward trends
2. Changes in the amount of variation
3. Differences between long term and short term
4. Repeating Patterns of cycles
5. Anything that does not to appear to be random

What is a Run Chart?

Run charts work by analyzing the ACTUAL number of runs in your data points and comparing them to the EXPECTED number of runs. If there is a big difference it is likely that the process has special cause variation and further investigation is required.

What is Data Stratification?

Dividing data into subgroups. Then the differences between these subgroups can be analyzed to give insight and clues on how the process behaves.

Why use Data Stratification?

The best performing subgroups can be investigated for benchmarking opportunities
The root causes of the worst performing subgroups can be investigated by using 5Whys and Fishbone Diagram etc.

What are Multi-Vari Charts?

Multi Vari charts stratify a data set by several factors at the same time and display the averages of the resulting subgroups. they can be used at the start of data analysis in order to look for differences between subgroups that can then be investigated in more detail.

What is a Box Plot?

When comparing two samples against each other, use Box Plot.
Box plot compiles of the ''box'' and the ''whiskers'' on each side of the Box.
A Box exists from 50% of the data and start at Q1 and ends at Q3, the middle line in the box is the Median, not the average.
The whiskers represent the range of the data (minimum to maximum)

What are Individual Value Plots?

IVP should be used in preference to Box Plots when subgroups sizes are small <25.
Used as a visual display of data.

What are 100% stacked bar charts?

Great for comparing proportions of Categorical or Attribute data
Pareto is great for one sample, 100% Stacked bar chart is great for comparing 2 or more samples.
Since the sample size is not readable in this chart it is considered wise to note the sample size near the graph.

What is a Scatter Plot?

Great for investigating if a relationship exists between two factors.
When a relationship exists the data points will show a clear trend or pattern when no relation is there, the data points will be random.

What is a Bubble Plot?

Scatter plots are great for two variables, Bubble plot makes it possible to add a third. Enabling more complex relationships to be visualized.

What is a Matrix Plot?

Matrix plot produces an array of Scatter Plots, so from this grid potential relationships can be investigated.
