Geometry - Circle Properties

8 important questions on Geometry - Circle Properties

What is a central angle?

An angle with  its vertex at the center of the circle (think triangle in a circle).

There are 2 ways to talk about the 'size' of an arc, what are they?

1) Arc measure which is the measure of the central angle (see video lesson 02.18)

2) Arc length (will be discussed in the next video lesson).

What is a semicircle?

A semicircle (semi circle literally meaning 'half a circle') is an arc with a measure of 180 degrees.

What is an inscribed angle?

An inscibed angle is an angle that has its vertex on the circle itself.

True or false: Any inscribed angle that intercepts a semicircle has to be a right angle.

True

True or false: if 2 inscribed angles (vertex on the circle) in the same circle intercept the same arc or same chord (on the same side) then the 2 inscribed angles are equal.

True (see video lesson 07.50)

What is a tangent line?

A line that passes a circle and touches it at only one point. Note that the word tangent traces back to the late 16th century and means 'touching' in latin.

True or false:
If we draw a radius to the point of tangency (tangent line), the radius and the tangent line are always perpendicular.

True
