Fabrication and Processing of Engineering Materials - Casting

5 important questions on Fabrication and Processing of Engineering Materials - Casting

Name five casting methods.

- Sand casting
- Die casting
- Investment casting
- Lost-foam casting
- Continuous casting

Describe sand casting.

In sand casting, sand is used as mold material.

Describe investment casting.

With investment casting, first a wax is formed in to the desired form. Then it is surrounded by a fluid slurry that will set. The wax is than melted and the molten metal is poured.

Describe lost-foam casting.

This is a combination of sand and investment casting. Polystyrene beads are compressed into the desired shape. Sand is packet around the shape and when the molten metal is poured in the polystyrene shape vaporizes.

Describe continuous casting.

Continuous casting is when the casting and rolling steps are combined.
The molten metal is cast into a continuous strand which is than passed trough a water-cooled die having the desired shape. Highly automated and efficient.
