What is the difference between embryonic and tissue-specific stem cells?
Embryonic are undifferentiated and can give rise to all cell types
Tissue-specific are not fully differentiated, they continue self-renewal, but also form differentiated daughters -
What levels of potency exist and in what stages?
Totipotent: zygote and first blastomeres
Pluripotent: later embryonic stem cells
Multipotent and Unipotent: are tissue specific, are still stem cells because they self-renew -
What factors influence the first level of cell behaviour control
Transcription factors, activators, repressors, chromatin regulators etc. -
What factors influence the second level of cell behaviour control
Processing and degradation of RNA, also RNA interference -
What factors influence the third level of cell behaviour control
Translation processing, protein localisation, complex formation, modification, degradation etc. -
What makes it possible to form complex organisms?
The fact that there are so many factors that influence cell function and behaviour -
What makes C. Elegans a useful model?
1 cell embryo and asymmetric division
Differentiation in larvae -
What makes Drosophila a useful model?
Stem cell maintenance
Asymmetric division -
What makes zebrafish a useful model?
Heart and organ development
Hormonal control of the reproductive system -
